Dr David Cartland - Informed Medical Consent

Dr David Cartland speaks about informed medical consent

Informed Medical Consent

Dr David Cartland MBChB BMedSci is a fully qualified doctor and GP. His First-Class Honours degree in Biomedical science included a year of specialist immunology and microbiology/virology training including statistical analysis.

The right to informed consent is fundamental in law and NHS policy. Patients have the absolute right to know the good – and bad – potential outcomes of any proposed treatment, procedure, or surgery. And they should not be tricked by medical practitioners who use semantics and omission to make a treatment, procedure, or surgery sound safer and more effective than it really is.

As a patient, you may be provided with the percentage figures related to the risk of something going wrong, for example… but are those figures for relative risk, or absolute risk, because there may be a huge difference between the two!

Here’s the People’s Health Alliance’s Dr David Cartland explaining what informed consent should really look like:

And remember… a lack of fully informed consent is actually no consent at all!

My Medical Choice is all about your Medical Autonomy in healthcare and making sure the emergency team treating you follows your specific wishes. When used correctly, it is a powerful system that can notify medical teams about allergies, procedures etc., right down to more personalised decisions such as people concerned about mRNA in blood, and/or, wanting a solution to vaccinated blood (as listed in the examples in some articles).

My Medical Choice is not here to judge your decision, it is about empowering people to have control over their own healthcare.
