When it comes to the subject of healthcare, My Medical Choice believes in the right to absolute bodily autonomy. If an adult man or woman is mentally competent to make their own decisions in life, then they should get to choose what they put in or on their bodies. It’s that simple.

That said, life these days is rarely simple and sometimes people need a little help along the way to support their choices, particularly when it comes to using the health service.

Many of our members join My Medical Choice to benefit from the Safe Blood system, as they don’t wish to risk exposure to contaminated blood during transfusion, or they prefer to avoid blood and blood products altogether. With the Safe Blood system, members can use the national blood donor database and private blood donors system, the legal medical protection from unwanted treatments and procedures documents, and the medical alert service that warns their emergency contact that the member is in hospital. They can also benefit from our educational information in order to learn about alternatives to blood transfusion and their rights under the law.

However, My Medical Choice has now added new features and services, including the Consultation Appointment Pack that contains documents to support our members through preoperative appointments.

Additional facilities are also available through our partner organisations, such as access to like-minded health practitioners and natural birth services, as well as advocacy and legal support if things go wrong.

We’ve also expanded our educational material via our range of Help Sheets, improved our Advance Decision Notice with respect to the issue of mental competence, and we’ve added this blog to keep our members up-to-date on important information, news, and more.

Another new feature we’re currently working towards is building a national network of trained advocates to attend appointments with our members, as well as a service for telephone advice and support – and you can help us do it!
